An uncle by the sea

A multimedia project including all of my favorites! Illustration, narrative, and a bit of an audio postcard.

Unmute the video below to hear the narration. Listen to the enhanced soundbed for the sound the waves on rocks, cicadas in the evening, and morning doves… well… in the morning.

For Erol amca. He kept a framed photo of Atatürk nailed to the palm tree beside him.

This isn’t a comic and it isn’t a news story!

It’s just something I made because one night in may 2023 my good friend Amma and I were sitting on a bench and she was talking about how she’s not really sensitive. BUT, she has a friend who is. and when she was talking about her relationship with that friend, she shared that she always tells her friend that, “I save my best patience for you.”

And it’s been on my mind ever since! Here’s a little drawing – some people think it looks like a tarot card – of moments of patience. Braiding my friend Khenzom’s long, long hair. Or having my fidget-y self’s hair braided. Comforting a friend when you might need comforting yourself. Planting a seed to wait for something that, honestly, might take a while.

I save my best patience for you.

More to come!
